The company Aquacria Arousa, part of the Sea Eight group, has announced an ambitious plan to double its production of sole at its facility in the parish of Castrelo, in Cambados. With public funding of nearly five million euros, the company aims to expand its facilities, increasing annual output from the current 450 tonnes to around 900 tonnes, thus consolidating one of Galicia’s largest aquaculture centres.

As reported yesterday by misPeces, the project has been granted €4.97 million by the Regional Government of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia), under a subsidiary programme co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF). According to figures released by the regional administration, the total planned investment could reach €12 million, making it one of the most significant aquaculture developments in Galicia in recent years.

The expansion includes the construction of a new plant of a 38,000-square-metres site in Castelo, adding 7,000 squares metres of new buildings ot the existing infrastructure. The project will implement a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS), designed to optimise water use, improve environmental control, and reduce ecological impact. This type of system is now emerging in Galicia as one of the key strategies for sustainable marine species farming.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2027 and will create around 25 new direct jobs in the Salnés region, an area historically linked to the sea that has, in recent years, diversified its economy towards land-based aquaculture.
