Aquaculture Europe Congress that it is going to be held in Valencia, Spain, next September is hosting a special session on Wednesday 24 September within the framework of the ThinkinAzul project to address the most relevant topics for boosting Spanish aquaculture. These include reproduction and genetics; nutrition, health and welfare; food safety and quality; aquaculture-environment interactions; environmental monitoring of productive systems; and the culture of microalgae and macroalgae.
According to Jaume Perez, co-chair of this session with Fernando de la Gándara, a panel of 12 leading experts will present national-level summaries on each topic, highlighting key challenges, solutions explored, and anticipated impacts. Presentations will last between 25 and 40 minutes, and will be delivered in Spanish with presentation slides in English to facilitate understanding among the international audience.
The session will conclude with a round table to summarise key insights, draw conclusions, and share perspectives for the future.
ThinkinAzul is a Next Generation EU project in marine sciences launched in 2022 that brings together research centres from seven Spanish regions-Andalusia, Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Galicia, the Region of Murcia, and the Valencian Community-to integrate and strengthen marine research nationwide. It focuses on three priority areas: marine and coastal monitoring; sustainable aquaculture; and the blue economy and innovation.
By the time it concludes in December 2025, the project is expected to have generated over 300 scientific articles and more than 400 communications at national and international congresses, leaving a lasting legacy for marine science and aquaculture in Spain.
