Andalucía Aquaculture SL, a company based in Spain, has received approval from the Port Authority of the Bay of Cádiz (APBC) to establish the world's largest Greater Amberjack (Seriola dumerili) farm.

The approval, given during the board meeting of the Port Authority, includes an investment of 35 million euros in construction works for all phases of the project. The concession will run for 50 years and will cover both the construction and operation of the farm.

According to the port authority, the project will occupy a 130,000 square metre plot at the Outer Dock, near the mouth of the Guadalete River, with a total built area of 91,383 square metres.

The facilities will be equipped with state-of-the-art recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) technology, and will include Europe's largest centre for research into new species.

Specifically, the project will include the construction of 8 multi-ongrowing modules, a nursery area, and a hatchery, along with auxiliary buildings.

The first phase will see the construction of a nursery, a broodstock module and a ongrowing module with a capacity of 1,000 tonnes per year, as well as seawater intake systems and a pumping station.

Phases 2 and 3 will see the construction of the remaining 7 ongrowing modules, bringing the total production capacity of the farm to approximately 8,000 tonnes per year.
