The company Bloom & Fish SL, incorporated in Barcelona last May, has submitted a project for the on-growing indoor of greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) at the por of La Ràpita (Ebro Delta, Spain) using a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS).
The facility will have a capacity of 240 tonnes per year, with juveniles sourced from El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz (Spain) and a production cycle of 12 months. The building, covering 2,600 m2, will be allocated at the Moll Saliner of the port of La Ràpita, within the transition zone of the Terres l’Ebre Biosphere Reserve.
According to the biological report submitted, the choice of species is justified by its rapid growth – reaching up to 3 kg in less than a year -, its natural presence in the Mediterranean, and its ability to be farmed at high density without aggressive behaviour.
The production process includes three stages (quarantine, nursery and on-growing in RAS modules). The facility will also rely on solar power to cut electricity consumption by 30%, while treating all waste to comply with the environmental limits sets by the Catalan Water Agency.
The information was released by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Government of Catalonia as part of the public information procedure established under Law 2/2010 on fisheries and maritime affairs.
During this period, interested parties may consult the project file online or at the officers of the Directorate-General for Maritime Policy and Sustainable Fisheries in Barcelona, and submit their observations.
According to official records and social media, Bloom & Fish SL is managed by Adrien Pierre Balthazar Bergerot and Thibaut Oliver Marie Raphael de Buor de la Voy, and presents itself as a company focused on the development of sustainable and high value-added aquaculture systems.
Once the public information process has been completed, the project will have to undergo the corresponding administrative procedures and technical assessment before obtaining final approval. The decision will depend on sectoral reports and on any submissions made by citizens, environmental organisations and local stakeholders.
If successful, Bloom & Fish would join the list of pioneering land-based aquaculture initiatives in the Iberian Peninsula for the farming of greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili).
