Innovasea Launches First Commercial Biomass Algorithm for Gilthead Seabream

France, 15/04/2025 | BiomassPro delivers over 95% real-time accuracy for gilthead seabream, reducing labour and improving fish welfare

Aquafrais Cannes

Innovasea, a global leader in advanced aquaculture technologies, has announced the release of the first commercially available algorithm for biomass estimation of gilthead seabream. This milestone marks a significant step forward for Mediterranean aquaculture professional seeking to optimise biomass monitoring and farm management.

The new algorithm is integrated into Innovasea’s AI-powered biomass estimation solution, BiomassPro and has demonstrated over 95% accuracy in real-time weight estimations of gilthead seabream. The system was successfully trialed with Aquafrais Cannes, a leading French aquaculture company for over 35 years operating over 150 offshore pens along the Mediterranean coast.

“We are excited to expand our multi-species offering and bring the first gilthead seabeam biomass solution to market,” said Rafael Cordero, Vice President at Innovasea. “Our compact, portable solution is require accurate, efficient biomass estimation across their operations.”

BiomassPro features a fully automated, lightweight camera system (7.5kg), which can be deployed and moved between pens by a single person in just five minutes-a significant improvement from previous methods that required four workers and over 30 minutes per pen. This innovation enhances operational efficiency and reduces labour demands.

By delivering precise, real-time biomass data to an intuitive dashboard, BiomassPro eliminates the need for manual sampling and allows farms like Aquafrais Cannes to improve growth performance, optimise feed distribution, and enhance fish welfare through non-intrusive monitoring.

“Thanks to BiomassPro, we get more precise estimates in less time,” said Jérôme Hémar, General Manager at Aquafrais. “Now, we can better predict sales and reassign our lean team from biomass calculations to other vital farm tasks.”

BiomassPro currently supports six species-Atlantic salmon, cobia, gilthead seabream, king salmon, red snapper and yellowtail. Innovasea also confirmed that an algorithm for European sea bass is expected to be released later this year.

For Mediterranean aquaculture operators managing gilthead seabream production, this solution offers a new level of automation and precision that aligns with industry goals of sustainability, efficiency, and fish health.
