Joan Riera to Address the Decline in Seafood Consumption at the European Aquaculture Conference in Valencia

Valencia, 24 April 2025 | On Thursday 25 September, the expert will address in his lecture ‘What is happening with the consumption of seafood products’.

Joan Riera

As seafood consumption continues to fall across the European Union, the upcoming European Aquaculture Conference in Valencia will offer a timely platform to explore the causes behind this shift. On Thursday, 25 September at 11:30, Joan Riera of Kantar Worldpanel will lead a key session titled “What’s happening with seafood consumption?”, where he will present the latest data and insights on consumer behaviour across the EU.

According to the most recent Eurobarometer report from the European Commission, only 29% of Europeans consume fishery and aquaculture products at home at least once a week-a clear drop compared ot previous years. Riera will examine whether price is the main factor behind this trend or if other elements are also influencing purchasing decisions.

Spain, which continues to top the EU ranking for seafood consumption, will serve as a case study in Riera’s analysis. Drawing from comparative data across multiple EU countries, he will provide a detailed look at Spanish consumer trends, including preferences for key species from both fisheries and aquaculture.

With over two decades of experience at Kantar Worldpanel, where he currently serves as Director of Client Service in the Barcelona office, Riera has worked closely with both local and global food industry clients. His expertise lies in delivering data-driven insights and actionable recommendations to support strategic growth in the sector.

As the EU aquaculture industry navigates evolving market dynamics, Riera’s intervention promises to offer valuable guidance for producers, marketers, and policymakers seeking to adapt to changing consumer habits and reinvigorate seafood demand.
