The Spanish Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Luis Planas, visited Sea Eight's sole (Solea senegalensis) fish farm project in El Musel, Gijón, which is expected to be completed by December this year.
The Minister stated that the Sea Eight project in Asturias, with a total investment of 140 million euros for all phases, is an initiative "important for the creation of jobs and wealth on the Asturian coast" and also "for the production of quality protein with a low carbon footprint".
The Sea Eight farm in El Musel is designed to produce 8 million fry in the hatchery phase and 1,500 tonnes of sole per year in the ongrowing phase, all using a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS).
It is worth noting that Sea Eight, which belongs to the Grupo Atitlan investment fund, currently operates three sole production plants in the Iberian Peninsula, two in Portugal and one in Galicia (Spain).
Jaime León, CEO of Sea Eight, recently told misPeces: "Our goal is to produce 7,000 tonnes of sole by 2030.
