Seafood Legacy, a company promoted by the Norwegian brothers Jonny and Roger Marøy, is taking the necessary steps to build the first 3,000-ton Atlantic salmon plant in Burela, Galicia, aiming to become a key producer of this species in this Spanish region.
According to various industry sources, the company is in the final stages of obtaining the necessary permits.
The company, as it has stated on several occasions, is willing to make a considerable investment of between 30 and 40 million euros in Burela, in the province of Lugo, reflecting a long-term commitment to the project.
The plant is based on recirculating aquaculture systems, the most advanced technology currently available for Atlantic salmon production. This intensive form of fish farming is highly recommended due to its low water consumption, the creation of highly qualified jobs—up to 70 operators as projected—and the strengthening of the local economy.
Moreover, the introduction of Atlantic salmon production in Galicia will allow for the diversification of farmed fish species, which are currently primarily focused on rainbow trout, turbot, and sole.
