Skretting has announced the launch of Necto, a new functional health diet for fish featuring the company’s proprietary EDGEOS PhytoComplexes. The feed, developed in collaboration with Nutreco Exploration, will be available in selected markets from the end of 2025.
PhytoComplexes, unlike extracts, are a blend of bioactive compounds derived from whole plants, or specific parts such as leaves, flowers, or stems, or combinations thereof.
According to Skretting, Necto represents a major step forward in aquaculture nutrition, marking the first time that the company has introduced PhytoComplexes on a commercial scale. These plant-based compounds, developed by Nutreco’s plant research division, are designed to support fish resilience, health, and welfare.
The company explained that the development of Necto responds to one of the key challenges in aquaculture today – safeguarding fish welfare. By focusing on resilience rather than only disease resistance, Necto aims to help fish cope with environmental stressors, infections and other challenges, while maintaining performance.
Results from independent studies, involving nine research partners across five countries, have shown that Necto supports fish health and welfare, with improved survival rates across several species.
Dr Linda Jensen, Team Lead Health at Skretting, states that with Necto, “we are harnessing the complexity of plants and combining this with years of experience in health research to create a truly innovative diet. Necto is a holistic solution that supports fish health and resilience in an unprecedented way.”
Anna Hesby Nessa, Skretting’s Global Product Manager for Warm Water Species Health, added that “Necto is not just another phytogenic solution – it’s a revolution in aquaculture. Through the precise selection and advanced cultivation of certain plants, we have taken a health product’s multifunctional performance to the next level.”
Dr Gordon Ritchie, Global Product Manager for Salmon Health, highlighted that functional feeds have been part of aquaculture for decades, but Necto stands out for its composition. “It is a powerhouse combination of solid nutrition, well-established functional ingredients and PhytoComplexes, which support normal immune function and physiological processes in healthy fish, helping them cope with inflammation and environmental stressors.”
Skretting considers Necto a new milestone in its innovation journey, contributing to more integrated fish health management and improved welfare standards in aquaculture.
