Aquafeed giant BioMar, French agri-tech firm Innovafeed, and European retail heavyweight Auchan have joined forces to integrate insect protein – derived from black soldier fly larvae – into shrimp feed on an industrial scale.
The initiative marks the first-time insect meal will be introduced into commercial shrimp diets on this scale, with the aim of reducing reliance on conventional feed ingredients and wild fish stocks. The partners argue that black soldier fly protein offers not only a low-impact, circular alternative but also functional benefits that make it a credible substitute for existing feed components.
The programme will be rolled out in Ecuador, the world’s largest shrimp exporter. The country shipped more than 1.2 million tonnes in 2023 and is recognised for progressive farming practices such as lower stocking densities and selective breeding. Shrimp fed on the new formulation will be channeled into Auchan’s responsible sourcing programme, reaching European in line with its sustainability commitments.
Shrimp raised on the insect-based diet are expected to reach Auchan stores in 2026, giving the partners two years to establish the supply chain and marketing framework.
The announcement was made at Global Shrimp Forum and comes at a critical juncture for the insect protein sector, which has faced financial headwinds. By emphasizing functional value rather than competing as a low-cost commodity, the alliance hopes to provide a replicable blueprint for sustainable aquaculture worldwide.
