If Cooke Aquaculture consolidates the integration of CUMAREX – the group’s production platform in Spain – with AVRAMAR’s Spanish operations, the company could become one of the most influential players in the production of gilthead seabream, European seabass and meagre in the Mediterranean.
As previously reported by misPeces, Cooke Aquaculture has initiated a process to acquire AVRAMAR Spain, the group’s Iberian division, which operates through a vertically integrated structure including hatcheries, marine farming operations and commercial activities, and currently holds a stronger financial position than the Greek part of the business.
Even if the restructuring process in Greece were to follow a different path, the combination of Avramar Spain and Culmarex would already provide a solid production and commercial base for the Canadian group’s Mediterranean strategy, potentially enabling revenues exceeding €300 million.
The scenario that could emerge may have implications both for the competitive structure of the market and for commercial dynamics in Europe, particularly in relation to large retail chains.
For the sector, the integration represents a further step in the consolidation of Mediterranean aquaculture, where production scale, operational efficiency and commercial capacity are becoming increasingly important compared with more fragmented business structures.
However, the final scope of the operation will depend on the evolution of the restructuring process in Greece and on ongoing negotiations. As a result, the sector will likely need to wait several months before the final shape of this new industry configuration becomes clear.
