The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has given the go-ahead for an extended application of DHA-enriched omega-3 oil derived from the microalgae Schizochytrium limacinum, produced by the French company Fermentalg. This oil can now be used in foods, supplements, and aquaculture, where it serves as a sustainable alternative to fish oil.

EFSA reviewed Fermentalg’s application to authorise this oil’s use in protein products, with a specified maximum level of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) per 100 grams. EFSA’s assessment determined that the production process, composition, and safety profile of this oil do not pose any risks, concluding that it is safe for use under the proposed new conditions.

The production method for Schizochytrium limacinum oil (strain FCC-2304) involves a controlled fermentation process, regulating factors like time, temperature, pH, and oxygen levels. The microalgal biomass is the subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis to break down the cells, followed by crude oil extraction via centrifugation and refining using standard techniques such as neutralization, bleaching, and deodorizing at high temperatures.

Fermentalg, a French biotechnology company specialisin in microalgae, will benefits from a five-year data protection period, giving it exclusive rights over certain technical data, which strengthens its competitive edge in the European market. This data protection window will enable the company to consolidate its market position and drive further innovation in microalgae product development.
