Gran Canaria Bass Company Edges Closer to Launching Its Offshore Aquaculture Project

The island of Gran Canaria is gearing up to host a new offshore marine aquaculture farm specialisisng in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax). The initiative, led by Gran Canaria Bass Company SL, has received approval under a streamlined environmental impact assessment procedure and will be developed within the designated aquaculture area ZIA-GC-9, located between Baja de Cabrera and Piedra de la Fuente, off the coast of the municipalities of La Aldea de San Nicolás and Artenara, in Gran Canaria.

According to information obtained by misPeces, the facility will compromise 24 circular floating cages, each measuring 30 metres in diameter, offering a total cultivation volume of 339,000 cubic metres. This infrastructure will enable the company to achieve annual output of 3,134 tonnes of fish, with the potential to scale up 5,400 tonnes by year six-approximately 60% of the zone’s allocated production capacity.

The project has an estimated investment of €6,8 million, with the company planning to begin operations with 12 floating cages in the first year.
