Morocco has made significant progress in aquaculture during 2024 with the establishment of 200 new farms across the country, according to the State Secretariat for Maritime Fisheries of Morocco. These facilities aim to achieve an annual production exceeding 124,000 tons.

The announcement was made during the 24th board meeting of the National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture (ANDA). The agency revealed that 322 agreements for the creation and operation of aquaculture farms were published in the Official Bulletin in 2024. Of these, 200 are already operational, resulting in the creation of 5,000 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs.

The expansion of these operations reflects Morocco’s broader strategy to strengthen its blue economy and support coastal communities.

In support of this development, ANDA launched two international funding programs with a combined budget of 300 million Moroccan dirhams (approximately €27.5 million), allocating 100 million dirhams (around €9.2 million) and 200 million dirhams (around €18.3 million) respectively to promote investment in the sector.

A key focus in 2024 has been encouraging youth involvement. According to ANDA, 112 social and solidarity-based projects led by young entrepreneurs received financial backing totaling 164 million dirhams (around €15 million).

Looking ahead to 2025, ANDA has prepared an action plan comprising 22 strategic projects. These include the consolidation of aquaculture hubs in priority regions, implementation of new regulatory frameworks, and the digitalization of investment procedures. The agency also intends to open new investment opportunities and enhance support to project owners through access to productive structures, equipment, and expert guidance.

With this momentum, Morocco aims to reinforce its position as a regional leader in sustainable aquaculture development.
