New Strategies to Combat Harmful Algal Blooms in Chile

In a pioneering response to the escalating threat of harmful algal blooms affecting salmon and mussel farming along the Chilean coast, a team from the Centre of Harmful Algae Studies, in Chile, has developed a cutting-edge methodology base don empirical dynamic modelling.

Algal blooms, primarly triggered by species of Pseudo-nitzchia, pose not only a lethal threat to marine life but also a significant health risk to humans due to the toxins they produce. In response to recent and sometimes devastating outbreaks, scientists and authorities have redoubled their efforts to devise effective strategies to combat this phenomenon.

The research team at the Centre of Harmful Algae Studies has conducted a through analysis of interactions between various phytoplankton species and environmental variables such as salinity and water temperatura. This study has enabled the identification of patterns that could predict the onset of these dangerous blooms.

Among the measures proposed to mitigate the impact of these blooms in the regulation of nutrient levels in áreas adjacent to salmon farms. Proper management of water resources, coupled with continous monitoring of critical factors like salinity and temperatura, could dramatically reduce both the frequency and severity of outbreaks.

Furthermore, in collaboration with technological specialists, a new early warning system is being developed that can be integrated into the daily operations of farms. This system will not only alert producers to favourable conditions for blooms but also provide practical recommendations for adjusting farming practices to mitigate risks.

This study not only signifies a substantial advance in the scientific understanding of algal bloom dynamics but also represents a beacon of hope for industries reliant on healthy and productive aquatic ecosystems.

With the implementation of these innovative tools and strategies, Chile is positioning itself to set a global standard in the prevention and management of harmful algal blooms, leading the way towards a safer and more sustainable aquaculture industry worldwide.
