The eighth edition of AquaFarm 2025 in Italy paid tribute to Pier Antonio Salvador, long-time president of the Italian Fish Farmers Association (API). In December 2024 he passed the baton to Matteo Leonardi. At the AquaFarm gala dinner, Pier Antonio Salvador was honoured by a distinguished group from the Italian aquaculture sector, including researchers, producers and traders.
Pier Antonio Salvador is a pivotal figure who has significantly influenced the sector, not only in Italy but throughout Europe, by championing inland aquaculture producers. He worked tirelessly to reduce the bureaucracy that weighs particularly heavily on small and medium-sized producers, promoted fish consumption in the HORECA sector and improved the visibility and perception of sustainable aquaculture.
He will lead COPA-COGECA for the next two years and is scheduled to meet European Commissioner Costas Kadis on 3 March to discuss the challenges facing the sector and the critical importance of promoting environmentally friendly European aquaculture.
In an interview with misPeces, Pier Antonio Salvador called for collaboration between aquaculture and fishing, emphasising that although aquaculture may benefit from the losses in fishing, both sectors are interconnected and must work together to progress. "We are in the same boat, and the future of aquaculture will always be in synergy with fishing," he stated, urging ongoing unity and cooperation between the two sectors.
It’s worth noting that AquaFarm 2025 attracted 110 exhibitors to a space of 7,000 square metres. The event was notable for a 30% increase in attendees, both at the exhibition and across the 20 organised sessions featuring over 150 speakers.
The next AquaFarm will take place on 18 and 19 February 2026 at the Pordenone Fiere, continuing its combined format with NovelFarm and AlgaeFarm.
