A team of researchers, led by Cristina Otero from the Biocatalysis and Bioenergy Group at the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry from the Spanish National Research Council (ICP-CSIC), has created spirulina-based gummies. Spirulina, a type of microalgae, is renowned for its antioxidant, blood pressure-lowering, and cholesterol-reducing properties. This innovative product is expected to hit the market in 2025, thanks to the Almeria-based start-up Alma (Green Gador SL).
This project is part of the EIT Food RIS Consumer Engagement Labs, a European Union co-funded initiative designed to promote innovative, consumer-centred food solutions. The programme brought together 106 consumer panels and 55 companies from 19 European countries to design and validate food products that combine health benefits with practically and sustainability.
The gummies, enriched with spirulina extract, are targeted at two key groups: individuals looking to improve their cardiovascular health and those with active or sporty lifestyles.
Science and Consumers Joining Forces
The co-creation process involved 20 Spanish consumers who participated in four carefully guided sessions led by CSIC researchers. Of the 12 original product proposals, the gummies stood out as the most promising option due to their appeal and functional benefits.
Spirulina, the start ingredient, is celebrated for its high protein, vitamin, and antioxidant content. Beyond its nutritional value, it offers targeted health benefits, such as reducing blood pressure and lowering LDL cholesterol, making it ideal for heart health.
A Proud Launch from Almeria
The start-up Alma will spearhead the product’s commercialisation. Following market validation, the company is now focused on technical development, brand design, and packaging.
The project showcases how collaboration between science, consumers, and industry can lead to innovative food solutions that meet real-word needs while setting trends in an increasingly competitive market.
With the launch planned for 2025, these spirulina gummies are poised to promote healthier eating habits and improve quality of life for consumers-offering a perfect balance of science-backed nutrition and convenience.
