Sea Eight secures financial backing from the Regional Promotion Society for its aquaculture facility at El Musel in Asturias

The Regional Promotion Society at the Principado de Asturias, in Spain, has announced a a €2.1 million investment in Aquacria Lafigal, S.L., part of the Sea Eight group, to support the construction of an advanced sole farming facility at the port of El Musel in Gijón.

According to the Principado de Asturias, the plant’s first module is expected to be completed by January 2025, with a production capacity of up to 450 tonnes of sole (Solea senegalensis) per year.

The project includes plans to develop five additional grow-out modules and a breeding unit in future phases, which will collectively enable a total production capacity of 4,000 tonnes per year.

The company is investing €13.3 million in the initial phase, which is projected to create 24 jobs within two years. Over the next six years, the total investment is expected to reach €120 million, resulting in the creation of 230 jobs.

David González, President of the Regional Promotion Society and CEO of Sekuens, formalized the funding agreement with Jaime León Santamaría, CEO of the Sea Eight Group, through a participatory loan worth €2.1 million.

he farm will utilise Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), which recycle and reuse water through mechanical and biological filtration processes.

All production will take place on land, eliminating interference with the marine environment. This sustainable approach significantly reduces environmental impact, positioning the facility as a benchmark for eco-friendly practices in the aquaculture sector.
