A new aquaculture project backed by two well-known Portuguese entrepreneurs is set to breathe new life into the coastal town of Porto do Son, A Coruña (Spain). The initiative, led by Sea Sole Acuicultura S.L., has been formally submitted for public consultation by Galicia’s Directorate-General for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Technological Innovation.
The proposed venture involves the development of a combined hatchery and marine farm at a site with a prior history of aquaculture activity. The project also forms part of the regulatory process to renew the company’s operating licence, as published in the Official Gazette of Galicia (Diario Oficial de Galicia) on 24 July 2025.
Sea Sole Acuicultura S.L., founded in 2005 and headquartered in Porto do Son, has recently undergone a major leadership transition. On 4 July 2024, long-standing joint directors José Juan Sanmartín Ruano and Sofía Sanmartín Ruano stepped down, making way for a new management team.
Control of the company has since passed to Renata María Neto Serradeiro and Maroeli Douglas, appointed as co-directors. Both entrepreneurs are highly regarded within the Iberian aquaculture sector for their pioneering work with Flatlantic, a Portuguese company specialising in land-based recirculation systems for the cultivation of turbot and sole.
With this new chapter, Sea Sole is reaffirming its long-term commitment to sustainable aquaculture, positioning itself to capitalise on Europe’s rapidly expanding market for farmed sole, driven by increasing consumer demand and continuous advances in cultivation technologies.
