The ambitious plan to build Galicia’s first indoor Atlantic salmon production facility, with an annual capacity of 3,000 tonnes, continues to gain momentum. Seafood Legacy Spain SLU, backed by Norwegian and Spanish investors, has recently secured approval from Portos de Galicia to develop the facility on port land in Burela, Lugo, in Spain.
According to the Official Bulletin of the Commercial Registry in A Coruña, Spain, the company has strengthened its organisational framework by appointing a new board of directors. The board is chaired by Jonny Atle Marøy, with Anders Hagen as vice-chair. Other board members include Fernando Arias González, Ivar Refsner, and Xoán Antón Regal Pino.
In terms of financing, the company’s capital has exceeded €10.06 million, following a recent increase of €4.71 million. This financial boost underpins the project's viability and enhances its ability to meet the significant investment demands.
The authorisation from Portos de Galicia grants a 50-year concession for the construction of a 23,400-square-metre facility, with an estimated investment of between €30 million and €40 million.
This approval marks the latest in a series of administrative milestone shaping the project’s progession. In February 2024, the Xunta de Galicia’s Directorate-General for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Technological Innovation granted a 10-year operating licence, reaffirming the feasibility of the initiative.
According to the Official Gazette of Galicia, the company will pay an annual fee of €53,611.68, along with 1% of its net annual turnover as a levy on its commercial, industrial, and service activities.
The project has the backing of Burela Town Council, which has expressed its commitment to easing administrative processes wherever possible to support the project’s development.
The indoor salmon farm in Burela marks a significant step forward in sustainable aquaculture, combining innovation, efficiency, and a commitment to fostering local economy growth.
