The regional government of Galicia in Spain, the Xunta, has authorized the immediate start of construction works on the first phase of Stolt Sea Farm’s new flatfish processing and packaging plant in the Rianxo industrial estate. Declared a Strategic Industrial Project (Proyecto Industrial Estratégico), the development represents an investment of €44.8 million and will create 100 direct jobs in its initial phase, rising of 173 once the second phase is completed.

Covering more than 21,200 m2, the new facility will expand the company’s current processing capacity-which is presently centralized at its Lira, Carnota plant-by automating the handling of fresh turbot and sole. It will also house state-of-the-art, energy efficiency production equipment and include an internal R&D unit designed to deepen collaboration with local technology centres and research partners.

Stolt Sea Farm is a globally recognised leader in high-tech, land-based aquaculture, operating 14 farms across five countries with almost 600 employees-half of whom are based in seven Galician facilities-and producing around 6,500 tonnes of turbot and 1,700 tonnes of sole annually. Some 60 percent of its output is exported.

By integrating advanced automation and dedicated R&D area, the project aims both to meet evolving consumer demands for innovative product formats and to reinforce a vertically integrated model linking hatchery, grow-out and processing operations. It is the second Strategic Industrial Project to be definitively approved in Galicia out of the 16 projects currently designated by the regional government.
