Stolt Sea Farm has made history by becoming the only farmed turbot producer in the world to receive Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification for all its turbot farms.
The symbolic award ceremony took place yesterday, 6 May, during Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona. ASC’s CEO, Chris Ninnes, presented the certification to Stolt Sea Farm’s President, Jordi Trías in recognition on the company’s commitment to achieving the highest standards of animal welfare, working conditions, and environmental responsibility across its nine turbot farms.
Jordi Trías, President of Stolt Sea Farm declared that this is a “truly proud moment for all of us”, and a “step forward in our commitment to ensuring the best experience for our customers”. Trías extended his gratitude to Stolt’s team “who made it possible”.
Chris Ninnes, CEO at ASC, stated that Stolt Sea Farm’s achievement “sets a powerful example to the entire seafood farming industry, showing that it’s possible to scale sustainably while protecting our environment, supporting communities, and ensuring fish welfare”.
Berta Fernández, Stolt Sea Farm’s Safety, Quality and Environment Manager added that “this is a fantastic achievement and a great example of the commitment of the whole team to sustainable operations and fish welfare, and to ensuring future generations continue to enjoy wonderful seafood.”
As noted by Stolt Sea Farm, land-based facility in Øye, Norway, became the first of its turbot farms to earn ASC certification in April 2024. By the end of the year, in-depth, independent audits had been completed at the company’s remaining eight turbot farms in Spain and Portugal, resulting in full ASC certification across all its operations.
The ASC runs the world’s leading certification programme for responsible aquaculture, promoting practices that safeguard fish welfare, protect the environment, and support local communities.
