Stolt Sea Farm (SSF) has announced the start of the works at its new sole production facility in Praia de Tocha, Portugal, following an official groundbreaking ceremony on 4 October 2024.
The new facility, named Tocha RAS II, will utilise a state-of-the-art Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) and will have an annual production capacity of 440 tonnes of sole.
This cutting-edge RAS technology has been selected due to its proven results in terms of performance and investment, similar to the systems already installed at SSF's plant in Cervo, Spain, and the existing facility in Tocha.
Additionally, the RAS technology is recognised for its efficiency in recirculating up to 95% of the water used, highlighting Stolt Sea Farm’s commitment to environmental sustainability and resource conservation.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2025. With a budget of €18.47 million, it is co-financed with €6.46 million from the European Union and €2.77 million from national funds, through the Mar2030 and Portugal 2030 programmes.
Jordi Trias, President of Stolt Sea Farm, emphasised the importance of this expansion as a key milestone in the company's goal of achieving 12,000 tonnes of sole production by 2035, ensuring a continuous supply of high-quality fish for future generations.
The company also stated that this initiative "is a clear example of how collaboration between funding programmes and innovative projects can generate significant benefits for both the economy and the environment."
