The European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare (EUPAHW) has opened its second international call for R&D project funding. The call includes areas of direct relevance to aquaculture, particularly in fish health, fish welfare and the reduction of antimicrobial use.
The call is open to international consortia and is structured around two main pillars: animal welfare and disease prevention and control. Within the aquaculture domain, priority is given to projects focused on the development of innovative vaccines and therapies, diagnostic and modelling tools, improved disease resilience, and technologies to assess and monitor fish welfare at farm level, during transport and at slaughter.
The call also encourages collaboration with industry to move towards practical, applicable solutions, as well as the inclusion of socio-economic analyses assessing the impact of new welfare standards and forthcoming regulatory requirements on European aquaculture.
The deadline for the submission of pre-proposals is 30 March 2026 (12:00 CEST).
Beyond the specific call, the initiative reinforces a clear trend: fish health and welfare are gaining increasing weight within the European innovation agenda, not only as regulatory requirements, but as key factors for improving production resilience and the competitiveness of the aquaculture sector.
