The European Commission plans to present a proposal by the end of 2027 to unlock the potential of EU aquaculture and simplify its regulatory and administrative framework. The initiative is set out in the Vision 2040 for Fisheries and Aquaculture, while the Commission’s 2027 work programme includes measures to modernise both sectors and support generational renewal.

The proposal would address obstacles such as licensing and authorisation procedures, and aim to provide greater certainty for investment and for those looking to enter the sector.

The Vision also provides for the launch in 2027 of an EU Initiative on Sustainable Aquaculture, a platform for coordination and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders.
