Damien Toner, from Ireland’s seafood development agency Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), has succeeded Marc Vandeputte, of INRAE, as European Aquaculture Society (EAS) President for 2026–2028. Previously President-Elect, Toner’s planned succession was formalised at the General Assembly on 29 September, during Aquaculture Europe in Ljubljana. Vandeputte remains on the leadership team as Past President.
His new responsibility coincides with his appointment as BIM’s Director of Development and Innovation Services, effective from 5 October. Toner has more than thirty years’ experience and has worked at the agency since 1999, leading its aquatech programme and contributing to the Innovation Studio and Blue Ambition conference, supporting the growth and international expansion of aquatech businesses.
Following the edition marking EAS’s 50th anniversary, Aquaculture Europe 2027 will take place from 18 to 21 October at the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre in Athens. Under the theme “Smart and Resilient Aquaculture”, it will combine a scientific conference, trade exhibition, industry forums and workshops, providing a showcase for Greek aquaculture.
