A team of researchers has demonstrated through a study that using fermented garlic as a feed supplement for mullet (Liza ramada) not only enhances the fish’s productive performance but also strengthens their immune system, offering a natural and sustainable alternative to antibiotics in fish farming.
The study, titled “Exploring the dual benefits of fermented and non-fermented garlic on the growth and health of mullet (Riza ramada),” highlights the impressive results obtained by incorporating this ingredient into the feed of one of the most farmed species in Egypt.
The research team, led by Dr Mohammed F. El Basuini, evaluated the impact of both fermented and non-fermented garlic supplementation on 225 fish over a 60-day period. The results showed that both types of garlic improved growth, with fermented garlic supplemented at 2% in the feed standing out its ability to enhance growth, immune system function, and antioxidant capacity in the fish.
In terms of health, fermented garlic strengthened the immune defenses of the fish, with an increase in the activity of lysosome, a key enzyme in the immune response, and improved resistance to bacteria such as Streptococcus agalactia.
The study also highlighted improvements in the fish’s digestion, with an increase in the activity of key enzymes such as amylase and protease, facilitating more efficient nutrient absorption.
The research, conducted in Egypt, also paves the way for larger-scale studies to evaluate the economic viability and long-term benefits of this supplement in different fish species and aquaculture conditions.
