The Mediterranean has always been more than just a body of water. It embodies history, culture, and, for many, a vital source of livelihood. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of delving into and sharing the progress made in the aquaculture sector through misPeces. Now, as we approach 2025, I feel it is our moment to take on a more proactive role in showcasing and championing Mediterranean aquaculture.
At misPeces, we’re passionate about this sea, with its extraordinary biodiversity and rich cultural tapestry. But it’s not just its beauty that makes it special—the Mediterranean is an economic engine and a natural larder for millions. Iconic species such as seabream, seabass, and mussels, which are staples of the Mediterranean diet, sustain not only people but also economies, creating jobs and providing stability for countless families. Yet, despite its importance, aquaculture in this region remains, for many, an untold story.
Our vision for 2025 is straightforward: to bring this sector into sharper focus for the world. We want its role in food security, economic resilience, and environmental stewardship to be widely recognised. To that end, we’re determined to amplify our efforts to inform, educate, and connect all those involved.
Among our biggest challenges will be tackling the issues facing Mediterranean aquaculture today. Climate change is already reshaping the region’s waters, disrupting temperatures and marine ecosystems. Added to this are challenges such as invasive species and competing demands for maritime space, which call for integrated, forward-thinking solutions. Through greater awareness and collaboration, we believe these hurdles can be addressed effectively.
This year, we will also celebrate the pioneering initiatives transforming the sector. From circular economy practices to cutting-edge technology that minimises environmental impact, we aim to highlight those leading the charge. Equally, we will focus on nurturing the next generation of aquaculture professionals, the future custodians of the Mediterranean.
Collaboration is at the heart of our mission. That’s why, in 2025, we will continue to strengthen partnerships with researchers, producers, institutions, and, most importantly, our audience. We envision misPeces as a space where ideas are exchanged, conversations flourish, and everyone can contribute.
The Romans referred to the Mediterranean as Mare Nostrum—not just because they considered it theirs, but because they recognised it as a shared treasure. At misPeces, we share that sentiment. This sea belongs to all of us, and it is our collective responsibility to protect and champion it.
In 2025, we will work tirelessly to ensure Mediterranean aquaculture is not only better understood but also more deeply appreciated. We believe that by safeguarding and supporting this sector, we are helping to build a sustainable and prosperous future for everyone who depends on it. I warmly invite you to join us on this journey.
Together, we can make a real difference.
