The European Commission has unveiled a new call for proposals under the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), €5.7 million to advance projects promoting a sustainable blue economy across EU sea basins.
This funding will support two key topics: Smart Specialisation in the sustainable blue economy and the promotion of regenerative ocean farming alongside algae innovation.
The initiative seeks to harness the potential of European seas and coasts to foster innovation and technological development. With the blue economy poised for growth, the Commission aims to accelerate the EU’s transition to a sustainable and circular economy while supporting its ambitious net-zero climate targets.
The "Smart Specialisation and Innovation in the Sustainable Blue Economy" topic will support strategic interregional partnerships to develop innovative solutions in fisheries, aquaculture, marine renewable energy, blue biotechnology, and coastal and maritime tourism. Activities will focus on the Black Sea, Atlantic, and Western Mediterranean basins, as well as the EU’s Outermost Regions.
Projects in the category of "Regenerative Ocean Farming and Algae Innovation" will demonstrate the environmental benefits of regenerative farming, such as cultivating local seaweed species or integrating seaweed with shellfish farming. The aim is also to spur algae-based product development and bring innovative solutions to the market. Target areas include the Black Sea, Baltic Sea, North Sea, Atlantic, and Mediterranean basins.
Proposals can be submitted until 18 February 2025 and must be submitted electronically via the Funding & Tenders Portal.
