The Peruvian Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has set a quota of 2.51 million tonnes for the second anchoveta fishing season in the North-Central region of the country, following a comprehensive evaluation carried out by the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE). The season is scheduled to commence on November 1st.
The season will end once the authorised catch limit is reached in the North-Central area, or if environmental or biological conditions require it, in line with recommendations from IMARPE.
Production Minister Sergio González Guerrero highlighted that this quota is one of the highest for a second season in the past decade, which is expected to generate more than $1.3 billion in revenue through the anchovy fishing industry. This sector plays a vital role in the Peruvian economy, particularly in the production of fishmeal and fish oil.
This activity will represent approximately 0.8% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2024 and contribute 8% of the country’s exports, in addition to creating employment for over 49,000 people involved in the anchovy production chain.
“We expect this outcome to boost the economic growth targets for the close of 2024, in which the fishing industry has been a key driver, significantly contributing to the national growth goal of 3.1%,” the minister added.
During this season, around 700 vessels (300 steel and 400 wooden) will be authorised to participate, with landings taking place in various coastal towns, strengthening the economies of fishing regions.
