The FAO’s General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, along with the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food, supported by the European Union, will host a conference addressing the present and future of aquaculture in the region.
The goal of this meeting is to evaluate the progress of aquaculture in the Mediterranean and establish priorities for the future within the framework of the General Fisheries Commission's 2030 Strategy.
As highlighted, aquaculture in the Mediterranean region has grown significantly—by 91.3% in volume and 74.5% in value over the last decade. However, it faces challenges such as climate change, population growth, and economic instability.
To meet this goal, the conference will cover topics such as sustainable production systems, strategies for tackling current and emerging challenges, the use of Artificial Intelligence, and promoting the role of women in aquaculture.
Government representatives, international organisations, and stakeholders in the aquaculture sector are invited to participate in the conference to discuss joint actions.
The outcome of this conference is expected to shape a shared vision for the future of aquaculture in the region, with a focus on inclusive governance and "blue transformation."
In addition to talks, live demonstrations of emerging technologies and exhibitions from relevant organisations are planned.
